Picking Sides
See what our readers had to say about the candidates they are supporting in the April 22 Democratic primary.
I support Obama

Barack Obama is the best choice for our next president. He has more experience than Bill Clinton did when elected in 1992, as well as four more years of experience than Bill Clinton's wife. She became a senator almost 8 years ago, but Obama was a state senator for 8 years, as well as a U.S. Senator for almost 4 years.

In his first 8 years as an elected official, Obama authored or co-authored 800+ bills, including those dealing with health care for children, videotaping of police interrogations, campaign ethics and more. To view his outstanding record, visit www.statesurge.com/members/923.

Never have I heard a candidate inspire hope within me the way that Senator Obama has done. I believe there is sincerity in this man that I have not seen in any candidate of this race or previous races. Experience alone does not make a great leader. A great leader is one who is trustworthy and sincere. A great leader has the courage to take the road less traveled and refuses to accept lobbyist money. A great leader listens to the people, is for the people, and stirs emotion in people that results in real change. This is Barack Obama!

Obama represents change that is desperately needed in this country. His message is sincere and believable. Even in the face of adversity, Obama has not shied away but has stood true to his convictions and tried to focus on the issues facing this country. Mrs. Clinton has proven to be untrustworthy and deceptive. Where does she stand on issues like NAFTA? In OH/PA she is anti-NAFTA. But in NY/TX she applauded the virtues of NAFTA. Her campaign manager was definitely for NAFTA. Also, how do you "misspeak" about being shot at, either you were or you weren't!

Sen Obama came to the Senate in 2005. That's just two years of experience, with one of them wholly dedicated to running for president. Obama's immaturity and lack of knowledge about foreign affairs were clear when Obama suggested (in front of Gen. Petraeus) that we "talk" with Iran. The good general has already confirmed that Iranian-trained militiamen with Iranian weapons are, even now, killing American soldiers. Obama should realize that we don't "make nice" with the enemy actively engaged against our military. Sen. Obama still has the training wheels on his bike. As a registered Democrat I find it scary to think he may become the next commander-in-chief. We need an adult with solid experience at the helm!

It's clear to that Hillary Clinton knows what she is talking about and has a plan to the country towards a better future post-Bush. At every turn she outlines a potential policy to handle whichever issue is presented to her. On Monday she came out with a plan to increase spending on finding a cure for Breast Cancer by 300 million a year. This investment in research will create jobs and sustain high-tech jobs dedicated to research. I like that she takes a stand on unpopular subjects. She also said on Ellen she would work towards equalizing the rights of Gays and Lesbians. My position on Barack Obama is cautious. He's working with a Media Company and Public Opinion Company to run his campaign. I've looked through factcheck.org and opensecrets.org and saw inconsistencies in his messages. These tactics remind me of how Karl Rove ran the Bush campaign. I don't want 4 years dealing with another slight of hand President.

I reside in Upstate NY, making me one of Hillary Clinton's constituents. I urge Pennsylvania residents to think very carefully before voting in your Democratic primary. My region has been decimated by staggering job losses in the past several years. Although Hillary has visited Upstate and made empty promises about economic revitalization, she has not delivered the goods. In fact, my employer recently "off-shored" my job to India, so now I am one of Hillary's many unemployed constituents. Listen to the voice of painful experience: Hillary Clinton is NOT the answer to our nation's economic problems. I'm supporting Obama.

What on earth would make an Irishman write a letter to the Post Gazette on a Wednesday morning? Maybe it is the 3500 miles distance between Dublin and Pittsburgh that gives us some perspective because Obama would win Ireland in a landslide. Let's be clear: a US president who is highly intelligent, disarmingly honest, who is a leader and has a clear vision for a better US and a better world would benefit everyone, not just Americans. Barack Obama has already turned the page on the conduct of presidential primary campaigns. He is, by far, our greatest hope.

Barack Obama listens to questions and consistently gives thoughtful, considerate answers. He always has, it comes from his real compassion for all people, not just those who agree with him. His responses are genuine, not rehearsed political double-talk and indicative of how he will run the country, seeking opinions from a strong and diverse supporting cast. The way he's managing his campaign is smart, efficient and with morality. That is what we need right now in a president to put this country back on the right track again. He'll end this war and bring Americans together to solve problems.
