High School Notebook: Rosensteel loses job after two big years
Wednesday, April 09, 2008

Despite two highly successful seasons, Rich Rosensteel will not be retained as girls' basketball coach at Greensburg Central Catholic.

Rosensteel's team won the WPIAL Class AA championship a year ago and made it to the quarterfinals this past season. But he was recently informed by Greensburg Central Catholic principal Don Favero that his position will be opened.

Rosensteel, 66, was the Centurions' coach for only two seasons, but it was his second stint at the school. He also coached Greensburg Central Catholic from 1979-94 and also enjoyed plenty of success then. He won 12 section titles in his first stint. In the past two seasons, he had a 42-16 record and was undefeated in section play.

Rosensteel is upset, first of all because he said he found out about his dismissal in a certified letter from Favero. He wondered why he wasn't told face to face. He also doesn't believe there is reason to open up the job.

"I have no recourse because there is no school board here," Rosensteel said.

"[Favero] is the judge, jury and executioner."

Favero would not comment on Rosensteel.

"It's a personnel matter," Favero said. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Rosensteel said he had a personality conflict with Favero.

"The last meeting I had with him after the season, he just fired me up," Rosensteel said. "He was pretty much calling me a liar, and I unloaded on him. I told him I was sick and tired of his nonsense.

"He accused me of raising my voice to him, but I told him he certainly earned every bit of it."

Rosensteel said Favero accused him of swearing at times this season, and Rosensteel didn't deny the accusation.

"I'm not going to lie. I'll fess up if I did something wrong," Rosensteel said. "But I only use three words. They're nothing horrible, and I only use them for effect.

"I have never done anything in my years but help [Greensburg] Central. A couple parents complained about some things and [Favero] used this as a wedge to get me out of there as coach."

OLSH hires coach

Mike Rodriguez has been hired as the new boys' basketball coach at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.

Rodriguez had successful coaching stints at Forest Hills and Windber in central Pennsylvania.

All-star lineup

The Kenny Durrett Memorial High School Basketball Classic is Sunday at Gateway High School.

The event, named after the legendary Schenley High player, begins at 9 a.m. with grade-school games. The feature games match the City League All-Stars against the WPIAL All-Stars.

The girls' feature game is at 5 p.m. and the boys' feature game at 6:30.

Schenley standout Deandre Kane will play in the boys' game. Kane, a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous Five, averaged 31 points a game this season.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Jankowski power

Peters Township senior baseball player Jordan Jankowski has picked up where he left off last season.

Jankowski hit two home runs Monday against Mt. Lebanon to give him six in five games. He had 14 home runs last season, which means he has 20 in 31 games the past two seasons.

It's been awhile

When North Allegheny's baseball team defeated Seneca Valley, 4-3, in a recent game, the Tigers handed Seneca Valley pitcher Cory Mazzoni his first loss since the 2006 season. Mazzoni was undefeated (11-0) last season and the Post-Gazette Player of the Year in 2007.

Memphis ties

University of Memphis basketball coach John Calipari played at Moon High School, but he isn't Memphis' only tie to WPIAL basketball. Assistant coach John Robic played at North Hills.
