And in his 30th season, the head Eagle soared to the top of the mountain.
Bob Rozanski, the Serra Eagles' coach for 30 seasons, had coached numerous successful teams in his tenure, but never one like this year's club. He won his first WPIAL Class A championship this season and then guided his alma mater to the PIAA title.
For his efforts, Rozanski is the Post-Gazette's Coach of the Year.
Serra finished with a 30-2 record and had a memorable PIAA title game, coming back from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit.
Rozanski, 54, has a 476-235 record in his 30 seasons at Serra. An English teacher at the Catholic school in McKeesport, Rozanski is married and both of his sons are former Serra players.
What was the biggest key this season? Losing last year in the playoffs really left that sour taste in our mouths. We had a good run in the playoffs last year, and the kids saw what it's about up close.
Most memorable moment this season: Definitely the state [PIAA] championship game and how we came back.
First coaching job: When I was fresh out of college, I coached at Penn State-McKeesport with Dick Henry. I don't know whether I should thank him or curse him.
If you weren't a teacher and coach, you'd be ... Something with outdoors, maybe with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. I love the outdoors. I love to fish, and my two sons love fishing.
If you won a million dollars, what would you buy first? A condominium on Marco Island in Florida.
You're addicted to ... Exercise. I do a lot of aerobic training.
