Snow Sports: Slopes and fairways special
Saturday, April 05, 2008

Ski or snowboard it up and then tee it up.

Hidden Valley and Seven Springs are offering snow sports and golf at reduced rates today and tomorrow. Guests can hit the slopes in the morning and the links in the afternoon

Lift tickets at Hidden Valley are $15 for adults and children. Seven Springs is charging $35 for adults and $25 for children aged 6 to 11. The chairlifts and surface lifts on the front side of each resort will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"We want to give potential customers an opportunity to experience our snow," said Bill Doring, vice president and treasurer of the Buncher Company, the new owner of the resort.

The company is celebrating the opening of its upgraded 18 hole, par 72 public golf course in April with a $29 greens fee that includes a cart. The 6,589 yard course was designed by Russell Roberts.

"I'm eager to meet everyone and encourage folks to stop out and see the improvements on and off the course," said Craig Yutzy, the head golf pro.

A round of golf at Seven Springs 18 hole, par 71 public course will cost $32 this weekend, including cart. Skiers and snowboarders who present their lift ticket or season pass will receive a $10 discount for the 6,560 yard course.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to experience great skiing, snowboarding and golf on the same day or the same weekend," said Dick Barron, the resort's director of ski and snowboard operations.

Hidden Valley will wrap up the snowsports season next Saturday with an under-the-lights "Final Slide" Rail Jam scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Skilled skiers and snowboarders are invited to compete for cash prizes and other prizes from the sponsors of the event -- Quicksilver, Roxy, Flow, Salomon and Skull Candy.

Participants can register at 6 p.m. and start their practice runs about 6:30 p.m. The fee is $10. Competitors will be judged on overall ability, creativity, style and landings. Spectators are encouraged to attend. There will be free "toss-outs" to the crowd. Food and beverage service will be available. Wear your boots. There's a lot of snow out there.

Splashdown success

The 125 participants in the Sixth Annual Pond Skim and Meltdown Party at Seven Springs might have changed their minds about trying to ski or snowboard across the two man-made ponds outside the Foggy Goggle Lounge last Saturday if they had seen them early that morning.

The 20 degree overnight temperature had covered each of the ponds with ice one-half inch thick. But the ice was gone when the skimming began at noon, thanks to a mountain crew that broke it up and removed it. The first of the approximately 600 square foot ponds was 2 feet deep, the second was 3 feet deep. Fifteen feet of snow separated them.

As master of ceremonies and announcer Chris Briden and more than 1,000 spectators cheered them on, the participants, many wearing costumes, headed toward the ponds. Only seven made it across. There were prizes for best costume, best skim and best splash.

First prize winner Eric Geiselhart of Monroeville received a season pass for next year. Jeremy Hoffman and Dan Dascani of Connellsville won midweek passes for the 2008-09 season.

Seven Springs provided 124 days or skiing and snowboarding this season. Barron said the resort received 122 inches of natural snow.
