Prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships have been awarded to three students at Carnegie Mellon University and two at the University of Pittsburgh.

The scholarships, established by Congress to honor the late senator, are awarded to college students who have "outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering," according to the scholarships' Web site.

The Carnegie Mellon students were Andrew David DeYoung, a junior chemistry major; Lawrence D. Jesper, a sophomore majoring in computer science and molecular biology; and Samuel M. Kim, a sophomore biological sciences major.

The Pitt students are Todd Moyle, a sophomore chemical engineering major, and Charles Richard Sleasman II, a junior majoring in physics and mathematics.

The scholarships cover up to $7,500 of educational expenses for one or two years.
