Sick juror in Wecht trial causes early recess
Wednesday, April 02, 2008

A juror in the federal fraud trial of Dr. Cyril H. Wecht fell ill yesterday afternoon, prematurely ending deliberations for the day.

The male juror was treated for an undisclosed medical condition and left the federal courthouse on Grant Street under his own power after he was attended to by a nurse stationed in the facility.

The jury recessed at 1:35 p.m. and is expected to reconvene this morning. Typically, the day's deliberations last from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Today was the seventh day the jury met.

Dr. Wecht is charged with 41 counts of wire fraud, mail fraud and theft from an organization receiving federal funds stemming from his time as Allegheny County coroner.
