Pirates reacquire Kata, sign right-hander Davis
Sunday, March 30, 2008

The Pirates added two players for their Class AAA Indianapolis roster, reacquiring utilityman Matt Kata from the Colorado Rockies for "considerations" and signing right-handed starter Jason Davis to a minor-league contract. Neither was added to the 40-man roster.

Kata, 29, spent 47 games with the Pirates in the second half of last season and batted .250 with a home run and 10 RBIs. He was designated for assignment Oct. 15, picked up by Colorado and was cut in the late stages of the Rockies' spring training.

Davis, 27, has made 130 major-league appearances, including 52 starts, and has a 20-22 record with a 4.78 ERA. He will join John Van Benschoten, Bryan Bullington, Luis Munoz and Ty Taubenheim in Indianapolis' rotation.

He spent 2002-06 with the Cleveland Indians, including a respectable 2006 in which he had a 3.74 ERA in 39 relief appearances. But he had a 6.31 ERA in 16 appearances for the Seattle Mariners last season and did not make the Texas Rangers' roster this spring. He had an escape clause, exercised it, and the Pirates signed him.
