The game: Matt Morris' last spring start turned out to be his most productive, but the Pirates lost to Minnesota, 5-4, in their Grapefruit League finale yesterday at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla.
Morris limited the Twins to two runs in six innings, allowing six hits -- including Delmon Young's solo home run in the fourth -- and three walks while striking out three.
"He was sharp," general manager Neal Huntington said. "He had command of all his pitches, the curveball was working, and the fastball stayed down."
Morris' ERA wound up at 8.03, but he appeared to improve gradually in his final two outings.
Matt Capps was charged with three runs in the seventh and was lifted an out shy of his scheduled inning.
Jason Bay and Luis Rivas each had two hits. Nate McLouth, Adam LaRoche and Ryan Doumit each doubled.
The Pirates finished the Grapefruit schedule 13-17, including a 5-2 run to end it.
They drew a total of 81,067 to their 15 games at McKechnie, a record average of 5,404. The previous record, 5,123, was set last year. There were seven sellouts.
Today: The Pirates flew last night to Atlanta, where they will open the regular season tomorrow. Today, they will have a 2 p.m. workout at Turner Field while the Braves are in Washington for a one-game stop to open the Nationals' new ballpark.
At minor-league camp today, Sean Burnett, the Pirates' final cut, will pitch his first inning for Class AAA Indianapolis. He reported to Bradenton yesterday.
Camp roster: There were three moves involving non-roster players: Reliever Jonah Bayliss and infielder Josh Wilson, each designated for assignment earlier in the week, cleared waivers and accepted assignments to Class AAA Indianapolis. Infielder Jorge Velandia sought and received his release.
Injury update: Paul Maholm will pitch batting practice today at Turner Field to test his stiff lower back. If that goes well, he will pitch a simulated game Tuesday.
Battle lines: The Pirates' final offensive leaders in Grapefruit play include: Rivas with a .368 average, a .455 on-base percentage and 21 hits; Steve Pearce with four home runs, Sanchez, Pearce, Bautista, Doumit and Jack Wilson with 10 RBIs; Bautista and Xavier Nady with 10 walks; and McLouth with four steals.
Among starting pitchers, Zach Duke had the lowest ERA at 3.32, Ian Snell the most strikeouts at 16. Among relievers, Burnett had the lowest ERA at 0.90, Phil Dumatrait the most strikeouts at 14.
Fun in the sun: As a much welcome gesture on the final day of spring training, Russell allowed his players a few extra Zs: No one was required to report to the McKechnie clubhouse until 11:30 a.m., just 95 minutes before the game. The usual routine, over the course of six weeks, had players showing up as early as 7 a.m. to prepare for 8:30 a.m. meetings and 9 a.m. workouts.
The earliest bird of all -- and most energetic, even before sunrise -- always seemed to be Snell.
"I'm always awake," he said.
Inside pitch: Here are minor-league assignments for the 14 players on the Pirates' 40-man roster who are not with the big club:
In Class AAA, starters John Van Benschoten, Bryan Bullington, Ty Taubenheim and Luis Munoz; reliever Romulo Sanchez; infielder Brian Bixler; and outfielders Kevin Thompson and Pearce.
In Class AA, starters Yoslan Herrera and Jimmy Barthmaier, and reliever Ronald Belisario.
Reliever Dave Davidson's level has not been determined, and reliever Olivo Astacio (shoulder) is on the minor-league disabled list.
Center fielder Chris Duffy is on the major-league disabled list and in extended spring training.
Countdown to Atlanta: 1 day.
