In the 2004 expedition, Mr. Cross heads for the Everest/Lhotse base camp, a hike that takes about 10 days.

This spring, Mr. Cross is in the Himalayas to scale Lhotse, the world's fourth-highest mountain.

The photos in this presentation are from Mr. Cross' 2004 attempt to climb Mt. Everest, the world's highest peak at 29,035 feet. In this attempt, he reached 27,500 feet, but a problem with an oxygen tank forced him to abandon the effort. He did reach Everest's summit in 2006, on his third attempt.

Lhotse and Mt. Everest share the same route and camps, but separate for the final summit push, so Mr. Cross will be covering the same areas shown in these photos for the Lhotse climb.

The photos in this slideshow are by Brad Clement of Spindrift Films.
