Sanchez cleared for opening day
Osoria, Dumatrait, Meek added to bullpen; Burnett cut
Saturday, March 29, 2008

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The cutting of Sean Burnett completed the Pirates' bullpen, and a healthy day for Freddy Sanchez completed the opening-day roster.

In addition to the Burnett move, the team yesterday:

• Told Sanchez he will be on the roster Monday in Atlanta, then watched him throw in the field for a second day with no pain in his right shoulder.

• Informed relievers Franquelis Osoria, Phil Dumatrait and Evan Meek that they made the roster.

• Placed outfielder Chris Duffy on the 15-day disabled list.

• Released Jaret Wright and Casey Fossum, two relievers sent out of camp earlier in the week.

Sanchez played five innings in a Class AAA game yesterday at Pirate City, fielding three grounders and making cautious throws to first after each. He also went 2 for 5 at the plate with two doubles.

General manager Neal Huntington explained that Sanchez was instructed not to throw hard because he had done extensive infield work in the morning.

"He did everything we expected," Huntington said.

Tomorrow, Sanchez will play another minor-league game and be allowed to throw full-tilt.

Osoria, 26, had been the best bet to fill one of the four bullpen vacancies and had a better spring than his 5.87 ERA would indicate: All five runs and five of eight hits came in one blowup Monday.

Having been Class AAA Indianapolis' closer last season, he and newcomer Tyler Yates could share right-handed setup duty.

"I'm very happy," Osoria said.

Dumatrait, 26, was an October waiver claim from the Cincinnati Reds. He was tried as a starter early in camp but was shifted to relief -- opponents were hitting him after his first turn through the order -- and has a 2.57 ERA in five appearances.

He was a first-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2000, but elbow surgery four years ago delayed his ascent to the majors until four games with the Reds last summer.

"After what I've been through the past few years, this is a thrill," Dumatrait said.

He will be the long man and spot starter.

Meek, 24, the Pirates' Rule 5 pick in December, never has pitched above Class AA but has a 4.00 ERA in seven appearances in his first major-league spring training.

Perhaps because he had little sleep for two nights, perhaps recalling that his career nearly was derailed by major control issues, he was visibly emotional after meeting with Russell and rushed out of the clubhouse to call his family.

"I can't even begin to tell you how I feel," Meek said.

Meek's power arm made him attractive to the Pirates, but scouts clocked his fastball at 88-91 mph this spring. He acknowledged taking "something off" his pitches to maintain the quality control he finally found last year.

Duffy will remain in Bradenton for extended spring training. Once he can throw -- he extended to an encouraging 100 feet yesterday -- he eventually will join Indianapolis.

By all accounts, he remains very much in the Pirates' plans.

"I understand I have to be patient and get this right," Duffy said.
