Franco Harris on board chosen for Pittsburgh Promise

Former Steeler Franco Harris is among seven people who will serve on the board overseeeing the Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program.

The Pittsburgh Foundation, which administers the program, made the announcement this morning.

Officials previously said there would be seats for Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt, the foundation and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which made a 10-year, $100 million commitment to get the program off the ground.

The foundation this morning said it will be represented by Richard Reed, executive vice president, and that UPMC would be represented by Candi Castleberry-Singleton, the health system's chief diversity officer. The foundation said two other seats would be held by Mr. Harris and Olga Welch, dean of Duquesne University's School of Education. A seventh director is yet to be appointed.

The Promise, announced by Mr. Ravenstahl and Mr. Roosevelt in December 2006, will give the first scholarships to 2008 graduates of district high schools and city charter schools. Each eligible 2008 graduate could receive as much as $20,000 over four years.
