Pittsburgh Councilman William Peduto wants the city to turn out the lights.
He's pushing for local participation in Earth Hour, a global drive to have people and businesses turn out their lights for one hour, starting at 8 p.m. tomorrow, to symbolically fight climate change. He was formally unveiling the local Earth Hour effort at a press conference at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum today.
"Pittsburgh will join cities around the world, from Chicago to Sydney to Tel Aviv, in bringing attention to small ways that individuals can take action on climate change," he said in a press release. "I am proud to see Earth Hour Day added as another step towards Pittsburgh's green future."
He said institutional participants so far include the Children's Museum, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Frick Art Museum, Highmark's Fifth Avenue Place and Penn Avenue Place, Madison Realty Pittsburgh's Landmark Building, Chatham University, and the Heinz History Center, which plans to turn off the Heinz Ketchup sign for the duration.
