TAMPA, Fla. -- So much for Tom Gorzelanny's shoulder scare.
Facing one of Major League Baseball's better lineups, he breezed through six innings this afternoon -- one run, two hits -- in the Pirates' 5-2 victory against the New York Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The only damage came on Derek Jeter's line-drive home run to left in the first inning. Alex Rodriguez's single in the fourth was the other hit, and there also were two walks to go with two strikeouts.
Most impressive, perhaps, he needed only 74 pitches to get that far, including a four-pitch fifth inning.
"Tom threw the ball really well, kept his pitch count low, and was efficient in the strike zone with good stuff," manager John Russell said. "It's kind of what you're looking for."
Especially in the final start of spring.
"I felt good today," Gorzelanny said. "I was aggressive, and I was adjusting to hitters. The last game down here is important because you like to have a little momentum going into the regular season."
Gorzelanny's spring was off to an ominous start when he experienced shoulder pain, and he allowed five runs in two of his past three games. But he saved his best for last.
The Pirates pounced on New York starter Kei Igawa for a 4-1 lead through two innings, highlighted by Adam LaRoche's RBI double to deep center in the first and Nyjer Morgan's RBI liner to right in the second.
Kent Sakomoto, a minor-league recall for the game, homered in the ninth to make it 5-1. John Grabow gave up a home run in the bottom half.
Franquelis Osoria rebounded from a five-run spanking in his previous outing to have a scoreless eighth.
The Pirates are 12-16 in Grapefruit League play and have won four of five, using mostly their regular lineup.
"We've gotten a lot of good pitching lately," Russell said.
Tomorrow, the Pirates' Phil Dumatrait will start against the Minnesota Twins' Francisco Liriano, 1:05 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
