Chinese blues for the soul

There's a fun and interesting article that I just noticed in my Google blues alerts about a Chinese woman who feels like a black American blues singer.

Her name is Liu Sola and she is described in the Singapore Straits Times thusly:

"Liu Sola is one of China's most mysterious musicians, authors and singers. Her physical appearance is Han Chinese but if you close your eyes, Liu becomes the embodiment of an African American blues singer."

And of her music, and her exposure to American jazz and blues, she says:

"I'm fated to throw myself into jazz and blues, which are to me a black magic. The gravity of blues is so powerful I cannot pull myself away from it."

She even talks about what she calls "Nengliang -- energy of life. That's what black people refer to as soul."

You can read the Straits Time article right here. And then you can wonder just what Chinese soul food might be like.

And it all just goes to show just how boundless the appeal of blues and soul music can really be.
