The jury in the federal fraud trial of Dr. Cyril H. Wecht continues to deliberate.
Jurors yesterday concluded their fifth day of mulling over a verdict for the former Allegheny County coroner, who is charged with multiple counts of wire fraud, mail fraud and theft from an organization receiving federal funds.
Prosecutors presented 44 witnesses over 22 days in their effort to convince jurors that Dr. Wecht used public resources to advance his private business and also defrauded his private clients.
The jury of six men and six women has been behind closed doors for more than 27 hours so far. They meet at 8:30 a.m. each day and go until 2 p.m.
Jurors will reconvene this morning.
If there is no verdict today, they will likely be released until Monday, as U.S. District Court Judge Arthur J. Schwab has not held any proceedings in the Wecht case on Fridays for the duration of the trial.
