KEARNEY, Neb. -- Delta State's 11-0 run midway through the second half snuffed the upset hopes of California University of Pennsylvania in the NCAA Division II women's Elite Eight tournament last night.

The spurt by undefeated and No. 1 ranked Delta State turned a one-point lead into a 75-64 victory.

"I'm happy we won. I don't think we played great basketball," Delta State coach Sandra Rushing said. "But we beat a very good basketball team."

The Vulcans end their season with a 27-7 record. The Lady Statesmen (33-0) advanced to the semifinals tonight.

Cal cut an 11-point first-half deficit to four by halftime and was within one, 45-44, with 14 minutes left in the game.

"We had a chance to take the lead, then we turned it over," Vulcans coach Darcie Vincent said. "And we know it only takes one possession to make or break you."

Delta State responded to the turnover with a layup by Jessica Boyd, who finished with 16 points, then a 3-pointer by Tamara Reed, one of her two 3-pointers in the game.

Within five minutes, the Lady Statesmen had a 56-44 lead.

Brittani Calhoun, a 6-foot-2 center, had four points in that stretch as Delta State took advantage of its inside game.

"Their post players had 41 points and ours had 11," Vincent said. "We tried to double down a lot and we were effective when we could get there."

But Delta State's inside game was too strong.

Calhoun finished with 11 points and Lakira Boyd had 12.

The Vulcans' post players, meanwhile, battled foul trouble in addition to Delta State's inside game.

Lindsay Johnson played only five minutes in the first half, and Kayla Smith picked up her fourth foul at the start of Delta's key 11-point run in the second half.

Johnson's first-half foul trouble "forced us to play half-court and I wanted to play more of a full-court game," Vincent said.

Even after falling behind by 12 in the second half, the Vulcans cut the lead to five on a layup by Brooque Williams.

Williams finished with a game-high 23 points, 12 of which came after Delta State's second-half run.

"I knew somebody had to step up and I just tried to be more aggressive," Williams said.

Delta State helped out by missing six consecutive free throws and 10 in the second half.

"They just kept coming at us and coming at us. We didn't have an answer for [Williams] and we didn't have an answer for [Shaquetta Mance]," Rushing said.

Mance finished with 10 points, while Crystal Andrews scored 14 for the Vulcans.

Delta State shot 51 percent from the floor, thanks to its inside game, and also made 6 of 13 3-pointers.

Jessica Boyd was 4 of 8.
