Gwyn Rohrer, of Aspinwall, was selected to participate in the 2008 juried student exhibition at Coburn Gallery at Ashland University in Ohio. She is exhibiting a digital art piece titled "We Were More Than This," an oil on canvas painting titled "Fall of Usher" and a print of a wood frame titled "City Dwelling."
She is the daughter of Wesley and Janet Rohrer and is majoring in fine arts.
The display will run through tomorrow and is free and open to the public. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The chess team of Providence Heights Alpha School in McCandless again won a first-place school trophy at the 2008 Pennsylvania State Scholastic Chess Championships held in Carlisle, Pa., March 8-9.
The state championship team in the kindergarten through grade six open division consisted of Mikey El-Kadi, Greg Kaniecki, Tyler Shick and Ian Tilton. Additionally, Tyler received a medal; Greg won a first-place trophy in the under 900 division, and Mikey was awarded a sixth-place trophy and the title of Co-Fifth Grade State Champion.
In the kindergarten through grade three open division, Alpha placed second, with Danny Fujito, David Groetsch, Anthony Mauro and Joshuah Musher all receiving medals. Other team members included Arijay Mehta, Michael Niggemyer, Xander Paski and Aaron Tilton.
David was awarded a first-place trophy for the Under 600 Division.
In 2007, Alpha's team also won the State Championship in the kindergarten through grade nine Under 1000 Division and has won the Pittsburgh Diocesan Championships in both 2007 and 2008.
The team is coached by John Surlow and Clyde Kapinos.
Matt Goll, a Seneca Valley senior, has been chosen as a Junior Achievement student presenter for the organization's Entrepreneurial Achievement Award presentation April 8 at the Westin Convention Center Hotel.
He will write and present an introduction for Robert P. Randall, president and chief executive officer of TRACO, the recipient of the award.
Melissa Grom, a graduate of North Hills High School and a freshman elementary education major at Waynesburg University, was one of four Waynesburg students chosen to perform with students from other colleges and universities on the stage of Heinz Hall, under the direction of conductors Robert Page and Marvin Hamlisch.
The others were Jordan Hart, of Cochranton, Pa., Jessica Long, of Uniontown, Fayette County, and Nathan Rishel, of Cooperstown, Pa., who represented Waynesburg University alongside the All Star College Chorus.
