PG West: Moon's Walsh healing nicely
Thursday, March 27, 2008

There are worse times of the year to be relegated to the couch ... especially for a college basketball fan.

Moon Area standout Brian Walsh has been taking it easy since being sidelined with a right knee injury in the Tigers' final game in the PIAA Class AAAA semifinal against Norristown March 12.

"I've just been lying around, not doing much on it," said Walsh, a 6-foot-4 guard who was recently named the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year and an Associated Press All-State Class AAAA first-team selection. "It's a lot better and I'm hoping to play in the game at Chartiers Valley."

The Hoops for a Cure all-star game is 6 p.m. tomorrow at Chartiers Valley High School. Walsh, who averaged 19.7 points and 7.6 rebounds a game this past season, was named to the WPIAL team that will take on the Class AAA All-Stars. Proceeds go to pancreatic cancer research.

"The doctor said it was sprained and that I strained the tendons on the outside [of the knee]," Walsh said. "I've been rehabing it and putting ice on it."

Walsh has been paying special attention to Xavier, which defeated Georgia and Purdue this past weekend and has advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. That's because Walsh has signed with the Musketeers of coach Sean Miller. Xavier plays West Virginia tonight in Phoenix.

"I always try to watch all of their [Xavier's] games," Walsh said. "But, yeah, I've been paying special attention. I've been watching to see what [plays] they've been running."

He has pictured himself being on the court next season for Xavier in the NCAA tournament.

Walsh has also heard the rumors that have Miller, a former Blackhawk High School and Pitt star, as one of the top candidates for the Indiana coaching opening. Would Walsh still want to attend Xavier, which is in Cincinnati, if Miller left for Indiana?

"I don't know," he said. "If that [Miller leaving] would happen, I'd sit down with my parents and talk to them."

Walsh is looking forward to playing in the all-star game tomorrow night because he will be on the same team with Norwin's Mike Shanahan, who is a good friend.

Late addition

West Allegheny senior Derrik Zeroski, a 6-1 senior guard who averaged 23.4 points per game, has been added to the Class AAA All-Star team for the Hoops for a Cure game. He is replacing Mars' Steve Cress, who is unable to attend.

Quigley Classic

The 41st annual Quigley Classic is tomorrow night at Quigley Catholic in Baden. The girls' game is at 6 p.m. with the boys' contest at 8 p.m. Teams for both games are North and South with Route 65 serving as the dividing line.

In the boys' game, some of the players on the North team include David Phillips of Beaver Falls, Bennet Poepping of Sewickley Academy and Travis Anderson and Zach Delo of Ambridge. The South team will have Tim Lipp and Brooks Roorback of Blackhawk, Gerald Boykins of Aliquippa, George Papas of Hopewell and Vince Scappe of Our Lady of the sacred Heart.
