Terrelle Pryor of Jeannette and Tyreke Evans of American Christian school in Philadelphia, two of the country's top high school athletes, lead The Associated Press Pennsylvania boys basketball all-state teams after achieving considerable recognition far beyond the commonwealth's borders.
The Class AAAA player of the year, Evans leads the all-state team in that class. Pryor repeats his football Class AA player of the year award in basketball while making the Class AA all-state first team for the second year in a row. He was a second-teamer as a sophomore in 2006.
Chester, winning a state title for retiring coach Fred Pickett, was the only school to place two players on the AAAA all-state team. Nasir Robinson, a Pitt recruit, repeats as a first-teamer, while point guard Karon Butler made the second team after averaging a team-leading 18.6 points. Pickett is the coach of the year for the third time.
Also making the AAAA first team were Schenley star Deandre Kane, who averaged an AAAA-best 30.8 points as a senior after helping his team to the state title in 2007, and Moon's Brian Walsh, a Xavier recruit.
Aliquippa's Jonathan Baldwin joined Pryor on the AA team. Serra Catholic, which won that title game 67-66, landed 6-8 senior Pat Grubbs on the Class A first team and T.J. Heatherington on the second team. Sewickley Academy sophomore Tom Droney also was on the first team.
Chris Walker resigned as girls' basketball coach at Oakland Catholic after leading the program for just one season. Walker's team went 16-12 this season and reached the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals.
Duquesne, which will compete in its first season in the Northeast Conference this fall, will play host to four of its first-year league opponents at the recently renovated Rooney Field. The seven games against NEC foes highlight the Dukes' 10-game schedule. The Dukes open their season Sept. 6 at Bucknell then, after an open date, play their inaugural NEC game at home Sept. 20 against St. Francis University of Loretto. Another highlight of the schedule is a game Oct. 11 against crosstown rival Robert Morris at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon.
South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia has been suspended from the team after being ticketed for underage drinking in his third run-in with police in about a year.
Hawaii cornerback Keenan Jones has been suspended from the team and was scheduled to make his first court appearance tomorrow on two felony charges.
Arkansas linebacker Freddie Fairchild was suspended from the team after he was charged on suspicion of beating a woman.
The Police Athletic League is sponsoring a Golden Gloves state qualifier boxing card with at least 14 tournament fights at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh South. Tickets are available at the door.
Tim Jitloff withstood a charge by junior competitor Tommy Ford to win the national giant slalom title at the U.S. Alpine Championships In Carrabassett Valley, Maine. Jitloff also finished third in the slalom and second in the combined at the championships.
Roger Federer, the world's No. 1 player, was honored as the ATP Tour's player of the year for 2007. He also won the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for the fourth consecutive year and the Fans' Favorite Award for the fifth consecutive time.
Striker Thabiso Khumalo and goalkeeper Andrew Keszler will join Pittsburgh in 2008. Each have been signed to play for the Riverhounds by head coach and general manager Gene Klein.
