Dance Review: KnotDance is so French! So fun!
Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Quaint cabaret music filtered down the stairs of Construction Junction. At the top, this remarkable urban space in Point Breeze was quite remarkably transformed into a crazy quilt of a seaside village, which provided the backdrop for an oddball collection of characters in the debut of KnotDance's "French Me."

Maddy Landi's provocative first effort (the 21-year-old is a dance major at Point Park University) was decidedly French and a kitchen sink collection of Broadway, "beach blanket" movies, Keystone Kops, caricature, Cirque du Soleil (whirling trapezes and drapery fabric), theatrical high jinks and, yes, dance. He also built the mishmash set, which Attack Theatre's Jeff Davis painted with a whimsical touch.

Landi showed a broad vision and a "magnifique" imagination in this European take on boy (Landi) meets girl (Beth Ratas), boy marries girl, boy and girl turn to other "affairs," including, but not exclusively, Davis. Can you say menage a trois?

It was all naughty but very nice, sassy and skilled in a lot of ways beyond Landi's tender years and a delight to watch. C'est la vie!
