In the blink of an eye, Connecticut turned another first-round NCAA tournament game into a glorified layup line.
Maya Moore scored 17 points to lead a balanced offense and top-ranked Connecticut beat Cornell, 89-47, last night at Bridgeport, Conn. At the first media timeout, the Huskies held a 7-5 lead and the 16th-seeded Big Red had to be feeling pretty good.
Then the Huskies did what they usually do to their first-round NCAA opponents.
"It happened so quickly, from a 7-5 lead to a lot to not so many," said Huskies coach Geno Auriemma, who celebrated his 54th birthday. "That's the way our team operates. We tend to go on runs like that."
Connecticut (33-1) will play either Texas or Minnesota tomorrow in the second round of the Greensboro regional.
"There was one stretch there were it seemed like Charde [Houston] was getting layup after layup after layup, getting good assists from every guard out there" said Moore, the Big East Conference freshman and player of the year who was making her NCAA tournament debut. "I think when we are running in transition, it's really hard to stop us from doing what we try to do."
Connecticut hasn't won a first-round game by fewer than 23 points since 1995, the year the Huskies earned the first of their five national titles. Charde Houston added 14 points, Brittany Hunter had 11, and Renee Montgomery 10 as Connecticut shot 54 percent from the field.
Allie Fedorowicz and Gretchen Gregg scored eight points each to lead Cornell (20-9), coach by Dayna Smith of Penn Hills.
Old Dominion 82, Liberty 62: Shahida Williams scored 20 points on 10-for-11 shooting night and the Lady Monarchs ended their six-game losing streak in Norfolk, Va. Nebraska 61, Xavier 58: Nebraska (21-11) led the entire game and by 15 in the second half, then held off a furious comeback by Xavier (24-9) in College Park. Kelsey Griffin matched a season-high with 26 points for the eighth-seeded Cornhuskers.
Tennessee 94, Oral Roberts 55: With the national player of the year candidate Candace Parker in foul trouble and neutralized by Oral Roberts' zone defense, Tennessee called on its other talented players to fill in the gap. Freshman Angie Bjorklund hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points to lead the top-seeded Lady Volunteers (31-2) to their customary first-round rout, a win against the 16th-seeded Golden Eagles (19-14) in West Lafayette, Ind. Parker had 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks in just 18 minutes.
