Beth McKain Parker, a Scots history enthusiast who was also very involved in home schooling, died Friday from cancer. She was 50.
Mrs. Parker, of McCandless, grew up in Ben Avon and graduated from Avonworth High School in 1975. After graduating from Chatham College, she served as co-convener for the Clan Donald Society and lived in Scotland for a year to establish the genealogical library at the clan's visitor center on the Isle of Skye.
After working for Andrus Architects, she was employed for a while by Holy Family Institute. She then left the work force to become a stay-at-home mother to her two daughters.
Mrs. Parker authored a Web site dedicated to home-schooling families. She was also a member of the North Hills Christian Homeschoolers and the Cranberry Christian Homeschoolers.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Henry Parker III; two teenage daughters, Dulcinea Marie and Kendra Nicole; two brothers, Richard G. McKain II of Kilbuck and Douglas S. McKain of Ross; and two sisters, Lauren Zwick of Avalon and Sharon Vereb of Saxonburg.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McDonald-Linn Funeral Home, 529 California Ave., Avalon.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, Harmony Parkway, McCandless.
