Washington Sunday: Cal's Adamson heads Mon Valley 'Hall' class
Sunday, March 23, 2008

James "Kayo" Adamson, of California, was one of the few football players who ever played college football while he was still in high school.

In 1971, California University of Pennsylvania named its football stadium after him while he was a member of the college's board of trustees.

The late Mr. Adamson and seven other sports legends will be the latest inductees -- three posthumously -- into the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame this spring. The event will be held June 13 at The Willow Room along Route 51 in Rostraver.

The others are:

• The late Robert "Red" Worrell, of Brownsville, a scholastic All-America football player from Centerville High School, who was courted by 135 colleges but ended up as a standout at Penn State University. An award in his memory has been given there every year since 1958 to a player of exemplary conduct.

• John Hewitt, a 1957 Bellmar High School graduate and U.S. Naval Academy football All-American. As captain of the team, this Belle Vernon native, met President John F. Kennedy at the 1961 Army-Navy game. Hewitt was the first Navy football player to play in 30 consecutive games.

• Gary Hogan, a Charleroi native, who led the 1959 Charleroi High School "Dream Team" to a 10-0 season. He was the starting quarterback at Purdue University before the arrival of future Football Hall of Famer Bob Griese.

• Joe Kurey, of Monessen, a tennis and basketball standout at Bethany College, where he eventually became its athletic director. As a senior at Monessen High School, he was part of a tennis doubles team that won a PIAA title.

• Billy Russell, of Donora, who scored 96 points to lead the Dragons' 1953 football team to the Big 6 Conference title. He landed a scholarship to the University of Detroit, where he received All Missouri Valley honors.

• Donna DeMarino Sanft, a Monessen native, executive associate athletic director at Pitt, where she complied an 82-50-1 record as coach of the Panthers' womens gymnastics team for 12 years. She was an all-star gymnast at Monessen High School and Pitt.

• The late John Wozniak, a 1940 graduate and football standout at Marion High School, now part of Belle Vernon Area, captained Alabama Crimson Tide teams that played in the Sugar and Rose Bowls. He also played in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game. He played professionally in the All-American Football Conference and Canadian Football League.

The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame has its roots in the Mon Valley Football Conference that was begun in 1925 and grew into the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame from 1951-1977. It was revived in 1994 and was expanded to the "all sports" format in 1996.

Steve Russell, principal of Belmar Middle School and a sports historian, serves as general chairman of the organization. He compiles the list of nominees and Brian Herman, long-time sports editor of The Valley Independent, heads a selection committee comprising members representing eight school districts in the Mid Mon Valley.

Tickets to the awards banquet and other information can be obtained by contacting Mr. Russell on weekdays at 724-258-3823.
