Fishing Report
Friday, March 21, 2008

Milder temperatures and rainfall have ended ice fishing on area lakes. Fishing continues on Early Season Trout Stocked Lakes (until April 1) and on the project waters of many streams. See Monday's Post-Gazette Sports section for a regional stocking schedule.

Lake Erie: Rain and snowmelt had the creeks running high, but they were dropping yesterday and were expected to be fishable today. The upper reaches of the streams had the highest concentrations of fish. No fresh steelhead runs have been reported yet. Smolts have been stocked, and anglers who inadvertently hook them are advised to handle them carefully, as they are the future of the fishery. Presque Isle Bay is mostly open water and yielding perch off the north pier and steelhead by the Waterworks.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Open water angling might be a week away. The Route 528 bridge area is opening up for shore fishermen. Last weekend's "last ice" yielded a few bass up to 18 and 20 inches, as well as crappies in the 10- to 12-inch range. Nice catches of bluegills also are reported.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Although ice remained on much of the lake, the open water at the spillway was yielding a few walleyes up to 29 inches to anglers jigging Sonars.

Oil Creek (Crawford County): The stream was blown out yesterday, and more than an inch of snow remained on the ground.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Water levels were up Wednesday and there was remnant ice in some of the bays, but much of the lake was open water. The tailrace of the dam was getting some pressure. As an Early Season Trout Stocked water, it remains open to fishing through March, then closes until opening day, April 12. The Youghiogheny River has the only other Early Season Trout Stocked tailwater fishery in the state (other Early Season waters are lakes.)

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Anglers were targeting crappies under the main causeway last weekend, but pressure has otherwise been light.

Monongahela River: The mouths of the creeks had been yielding white bass, although recent rains have raised water levels. The Allegheny and Ohio rivers also have been running high.

Youghiogheny River/Casselman River/Meadow Run (Fayette County): A lot of trout have been released in recent days, although heavy rains have affected conditions. The upper Youghiogheny River from the outflow to the Casselman tends to be fishable when other parts of the river are blown out, depending on discharges from the Yough Dam. Hare's Ear nymphs, Wooly Buggers and streamers in various colors have been fishing well on Meadow Run.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): The ice is gone and anglers are catching legal-size northern pike, pickerel and a few largemouth bass. Quality crappies also are reported, but the numbers aren't there yet.

Spring Creek (Centre County): Water was up and a little off-color but fishable yesterday. The Blue-Winged Olive is the main hatch. Anglers also are nymphing and fishing streamers and releasing brown trout 11 to 14 inches. The Little Juniata River was still running high enough yesterday and nearly unfishable, according to Flyfisher's Paradise in State College.

Deep Creek Lake (Maryland): Walleyes are hitting on jigs and minnows in 55 feet.
