WASHINGTON -- Bob Huggins has made a living out of rebuilding basketball programs in a short time span and leading them to the NCAA tournament.
This year was no different.
Huggins scrapped the 1-3-1 defensive scheme utilized by his predecessor, John Beilein and instituted an aggressive, man-to-man defense.
Huggins also put a heavy emphasis on improving one of the country's worst rebounding teams.
Still, Huggins owes a big thanks to Beilein for recruiting a pile of shooters -- guys who can make 3-pointers from just about everywhere on the court.
Seventh-seeded West Virginia hit 11 of 19 3-pointers last night en route to a 75-65 victory over 10th-seeded Arizona in the first round of the NCAA tournament at the Verizon Center.
The Mountaineers (25-10) advanced to tomorrow's second round in the West Region, where they will meet second-seeded Duke (28-5).
Alex Rouff led the Mountaineers with 21 points. Da'Sean Butler added 19, Joe Alexander 14 and Darris Nichols 14.
Chase Budinger had 23 points for Arizona (19-15).
In Denver earlier today, Pitt defeated Oral Roberts, 82-63, in the first round of the NCAA tournament today at the Pepsi Center. The Panthers will play Michigan State in a second-round game tomorrow night.
Levance Fields led Pitt with 23 points. Sam Young scored 14, Keith Benjamin and Gilbert Brown 12 and Ronald Ramon 10.
Oral Roberts had the lead for the first eight minutes of the game, but the Panthers quickly assumed control. They went on an 18-0 run and ended the half outscoring the Golden Eagles, 37-11, in the final 11:40.
Fields led the charge. He scored all 16 of his first-half points in the final 11:40.
