Spring Synopsis: Pirates drop night game at McKechnie
Thursday, March 20, 2008
The game: The Pirates lost to the New York Yankees, 12-9, in the first night game in the 85-year history of McKechnie Field.

Reviews on playing under the McKechnie lights were a bit mixed.

"They were all right," second baseman Freddy Sanchez said. "They were OK."

"They're fine," center fielder Nate McLouth said. "I've played under way worse."

"It was hard to judge," right fielder Xavier Nady said. "It was our first night game [of the spring]. It was kind of hard to focus, but it's that way with the first night game anywhere."

Pirates starter Matt Morris worked four innings, allowing 13 hits and eight runs. In 13 innings, the right-hander has yielded 29 hits and 13 earned runs.

McLouth went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and two runs scored.

The Pirates led, 9-8, through seven innings, but right-hander Byung-Hyun Kim allowed four runs in the eighth.

Kim yielded two more home runs. In four innings, he has yielded five home runs.

Injury update: Sanchez, limited to designated hitter duty all spring because of lingering soreness from September shoulder surgery, played second base for the first time.

He had to make only one throw, retiring Hideki Matsui on a routine ground ball to end the fourth inning.

Sanchez played five innings and won't play today.

"I got out there and got my feet wet," he said. "I just didn't feel like I'm where I need to be. There's discomfort [in the shoulder]. The positive news is I wasn't in pain. A week ago, there was pain. The week before that there was pain."

Sanchez probably will play every other game the next several days before trying to play back-to-back games.

Sanchez conceded that if his shoulder feels the same by opening day March 31 as it did last night, he probably wouldn't play.

"I wouldn't be doing the team any good," he said. "But we have 10 or 11 days left. Hopefully it will be all positive."

Trade talk: Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said teams have called him asking about the availability of left-hander Sean Burnett, who could land a spot in the Pirates' bullpen. "We're not interest in moving him," Huntington said. "We like him. We're excited about what he's doing."

Fun in the wind: Bradenton was under a high wind advisory from noon until 8 p.m. Winds during the day were consistently 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

That promised to make playing in the breezy conditions a bit of an adventure.

"You just try to catch the ball," McLouth said. "Fundamentals are secondary. It's probably not going to look pretty, but just catch the ball. It's not easy -- nor is it fun."

In memoriam: The Pirates observed a moment of silence before the game in honor of former Pirates pitcher Bob Purkey, who died Sunday.

Today: The Pirates play Philadelphia in Clearwater. Ian Snell is scheduled to start against the Phillies' Adam Eaton. Evan Meek, Jaret Wright and Franquelis Osoria, who seems to have a bullpen spot locked up, also are scheduled to pitch for the Pirates.

Camp roster: The Pirates have 39 players in camp, including 20 pitchers, 4 catchers, 9 infielders and 6 outfielders.
