Music Preview: The Bryan Wilson of soul is on his way

Bryan Wilson -- "I love gospel music. I love the message that it gives."

Did you know Bryan Wilson is coming to Pittsburgh?

No, that's not a typo, and, yes, we mean Bryan Wilson -- just not the one of Beach Boys fame (who spells his name 'Brian.')

This Bryan Wilson is a 24-year-old gospel artist, who will be a guest soloist Easter Sunday at Pentecostal Church of God in Christ in East Liberty.

Wilson found himself in the spotlight at age 12 with his rendition of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" as a member of the Mississippi Children's Choir.

Then came Stellar and Dove award nominations, television appearances, touring with gospel stars, and two solo CDs. Anybody who heard Wilson's soul-stirring, stratosphere-defying voice as a youngster knows those nominations and the attention were much deserved.

Fast forward to the present, and Wilson, after a break for the inevitable voice change and college, has a new CD called "A Second Coming." It's described as "urban contemporary gospel," which is a change from the more traditional songs he rendered as a child singer.

"I love gospel music. I love the message that it gives. I love the different aspects of it," he said. "In this time of my life I felt it was needed to explore more of the contemporary aspects of it."

In concert, he does the urban tracks and also includes the standards that people know and love but sometimes with a twist. For example, he explains a recent performance of "Jesus Is on Main Line."

"Instead of doing it on the regular 4/4 time, I put a little neo-soul vibe to it," Wilson explained.

A native of Danville, Ill., whose family later moved to Orangeburg, S.C., he credits his choir director mother with keeping his feet on the ground as he became a well-known child gospel artist.

"I was still Bryan. I washed dishes and I thank God for that. I thank God for my family. They really supported me and kept me humble." It is a sizable family including three brothers and five sisters, with Bryan smack dab in the middle.

His recent promotional appearances have taken him to Nashville, Atlanta, Cleveland, Akron and Chicago. Wilson said he's gotten very good response to his new music.

"Something that I find very peculiar is that a lot of people haven't heard me sing in a while, and they're interested in what's going to come out. They've embraced the new sound and being an artist of any type you have to use wisdom and know your audience."
