PG East: Plum High wrestler Zummo goes out a winner
Thursday, March 20, 2008

With his high school career behind him, Zack Zummo has begun the task of trying to select a college.

"I would certainly like to continue my wrestling career in college, but haven't made a decision yet," said Zummo, a senior at Plum High School. "My plan is to make visits to Clarion, Buffalo and Pitt-Johnstown in the next few weeks. I may even consider another visit or two, but those three have shown the most interest thus far."

Zummo finished his career at Plum with a 106-14 record. He won a pair of WPIAL Class AAA titles and was a two-time PIAA place-winner, but didn't place as high at this year's PIAA tournament as he had hoped.

"I could have placed higher," said Zummo, who finished eighth in the 130-pound weight class after posting a 2-3 record at Hershey. "I didn't wrestle as well as I had hoped."

Zummo lost to the fifth, sixth and seventh-place finishers and ended his senior season with a 39-5 record.

"Zack didn't fulfill his dream of winning a state title at Hershey, but not many kids reach that goal," Plum coach Chuck Froehlich said.

"When you look back at Zack's career, he has a lot to be proud of."

Zummo capped his scholastic career with Saturday's appearance in The Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, which was held at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House. He recorded a 11-5 win in the 130-pound preliminary bout against Matt Gaffney (165-17), a Wisconsin champion from Saulk Prairie.

The WPIAL All-Stars posted a 36-15 win against the Wisconsin All-Stars.

"It was a great honor to wrestle in The Classic," Zummo said. "It was a great experience. It also allowed me to end my scholastic career on a winning note."

Zummo plans to spend most of the offseason competing in freestyle, with hopes of making a return trip to Fargo, N.D., for the USA Wrestling Junior National Tournament.

Classic happening

Burrell had three entries on the Pennsylvania All-Star Team -- Shane Welsh, Jordan Shields and Bobby Speer -- but only one recorded a victory.

Welsh (178-28), a four-time PIAA Class AA place-winner, two-time WPIAL champion and a PIAA runner-up, recorded a 3-2 win at 135 pounds against Nick Hucke (161-30), a three-time Wisconsin champion from Arrowhead High School.

Shields (162-27), a four-time WPIAL champion, three-time PIAA place-winner and two-time PIAA finalist, dropped a 2-1 decision in the 140-pound bout against Cole Schmitt (170-7), a three-time Wisconsin champion from Belleville High School.

Speer (104-39), a WPIAL and Southwest Region champion, dropped a 6-0 decision in his 145-pound bout against Dillon Bera (131-22), a Wisconsin champion from Kaukauna High School.

Other Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic participants from the East Suburban area are:

• Kiski Area's Zach Cecchetti (129-46) opened the preliminary match with a 6-2 loss to Grant Sutter (167-20), a two-time Wisconsin champion from Dodgeville, at 112 pounds. Cecchetti was a two-time WPIAL Class AAA runner-up and one-time PIAA placewinner.

• Hempfield's Nico Cortese (157-16) followed with a 6-2 win at 119 pounds against Thane Antczak (171-11), a two-time state champion from Chetek Prairie Farm. Cortese was a two-time WPIAL champion and four-time PIAA placewinner.

• Kiski School's Brock Livorio (132-21) became the first from his school to wrestle at The Classic. Livorio, a resident of Irwin who began his wrestling career at Penn-Trafford High School, pinned Malachi Root of Green Bay Preble at 125 pounds.

• Norwin's Mike Salopek (112-18) posted a 12-8 win against Luke Friemoth (166-19) of Neillsville in the 189-pound bout. Salopek is a WPIAL Class AAA champion and two-time PIAA place-winner.
