TV Notes: Fox has 2 new comedies in works
Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Fox has ordered a pilot for "Courtroom K," a legal comedy from "House" executive producer Paul Attanasio, while "Borat's" Ken Davitian will join Bernie Mac in the cast of Fox's comedy pilot "Starting Under."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Courtroom K" is set in Milwaukee Superior Court and focuses on a judge, a prosecutor and a public defender. Attanasio wrote the script on spec and will executive produce.

In addition to his long tenure on "House," other writing-producing TV credits for Attanasio include work on "Gideon's Crossing" and "Homicide: Life on the Street." He's been nominated for a pair of Oscars for adapting "Quiz Show" and "Donnie Brasco."

"Starting Under" from Warner Bros. features Mac as a man who has to move in with his son and start working for him.

Davitian will not play Mac's son.

While Variety and The Hollywood Reporter can't decide if the main character's son works at a liquor warehouse or a marketing firm, they agree that Davitian will play a guy named Ken, who becomes buddies with Mac's character.

In other pilot news, CBS has ordered a comedy pilot titled "Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal" from -- you guessed it -- Mike Birbiglia (and Andrew Secunda).

That project is based on stand-up comic Birbiglia's regular weekly blog/e-mail chronicling his life in Brooklyn. (Zap2It.com)

From "SVU" to "Gym"

Christopher Meloni, star of the Special Victims Unit offshoot of the "Law & Order" franchise, will star in Nickeldeon's first original primetime family TV movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The rather daunting, 6-foot actor will play the titular "Gym Teacher," a has-been Olympics gold-medal contender who is setting his sights on the gym teacher of the year award. Unfortunately, he's not shown to his best advantage by one of his less-coordinated students (Nathan Kress), who just also happens to be the son of an English teacher (Amy Sedaris) that he falls for.

David Alan Grier also stars in the movie that will premiere in August.

Meloni, 46, is best known for playing the hot-tempered Det. Elliot Stabler on "Law & Order: SVU." He also played bisexual serial killer Chris Keller on HBO's "Oz." (Zap2It.com)

HBO exec steps down

The head of entertainment programming at HBO, Carolyn Strauss, is leaving that role but will remain with the premium cable channel in a yet-to-be-determined capacity. A search is underway for her replacement.

The channel, a big money earner for parent company Time Warner Inc., hasn't had recent hit shows that rival previous acclaimed series such as "Sex and the City" and "The Sopranos." (AP)
