Roddick loses temper, match in third round at Indian Wells

Andy Roddick lost his temper -- and his third-round match at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Roddick broke at least two rackets, hit a ball out of the crowded stadium and threw several small temper tantrums yesterday in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Tommy Haas. The loss, only Roddick's third of the year in 18 matches, marked his earliest exit from the ATP Tour event and followed tournament titles at San Jose and Dubai and a quarterfinal effort at Memphis.

Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova improved to 16-0 in 2008 with a ragged 7-5, 6-3 win over Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, the No. 26 seed.

More tennis

Todd Martin, 37, beat John McEnroe, 6-3, 6-1, to win The Oliver Group Champions Cup in Naples, Fla., for his third career Champions Series victory.

Football

Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White, 23, has been cited in Denver with destruction of property, disobedience to a lawful order/interference and resistance. White was cited near a downtown club that was throwing a party in his honor Friday night.

Danny Wimprine threw seven touchdown passes and the host New Orleans VooDoo (2-1) took advantage of eight Tampa Bay turnovers to beat the Storm (2-1), 76-55, in the Arena Football League.

Tony Graziani threw six touchdown passes before his left knee was sprained as the Philadelphia Soul (3-0) rolled to a 63-42 victory against the New York Dragons (1-2).

Baseball

Sean Conley's three-run home run highlighted a nine-run first inning as Pitt defeated New Jersey Tech, 17-2, in the Panthers' third game of the Papa John's Challenge in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Fishing

Kevin VanDam won a BASS event in Florida for the first time in his 18-year career, taking the Citrus Slam in Lake Wales, Fla. VanDam, from Kalamazoo, Mich., the career money leader, had a catch of 10 pounds, 6 ounces for a tournament total of 59-7. Ray Sedgwick of Cross, S.C., was second at 57-12.

Track and field

Pitt senior Sam Bair picked up his third All-America honor at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Bair of Shaler placed fifth in the final of the mile run with a time of 4:05.50.

Wrestling

Pitt-Johnstown (87) finished fourth behind Nebraska Kearney (108.5), Minnesota State Mankato (108) and Nebraska Omaha (93.5) in the NCAA Division II championships at Grand Rapids, Iowa.

Harness racing

Jockeys Dick Stillings and Dave Palone will be honored with hall of fame inductions. Stillings was named to the Washington-Greene County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and Palone to the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.
