Clavichord.

Jeremy Pople spelled that word correctly in the 12th round of the 58th annual Western Pennsylvania Spelling Bee this afternoon and won an expenses-paid trip to the national championships in Washington, D.C., in May.

The 12-year-old seventh-grader at Mellon Middle School in Mt. Lebanon was the only contestant among five left standing in the 11th round of the bee to correctly spell a word.

A clavichord, by the way, is an early keyboard instrument smaller than a piano.

The spelling bee is sponsored by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Carnegie Science Center. It was held at the Frick Fine Arts Building in Oakland.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
