MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Pro Day was no slow day for a handful of former Mountaineers.
Tailback Steve Slaton, his sprint speed apparently questioned by some NFL types, along with receiver Darius Reynaud and fullback Owen Schmitt, yesterday each showed at least 23 teams that their feet were a shade more fleet than a month ago at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Slaton was asked by NFL scouts to run a 40-yard dash a third time, what with a starting problem on the first attempt that he finished in 4.54 seconds.
The next two tries, he covered the Caperton Indoor Facility turf in 4.49 and 4.47 seconds. This, despite weighing in two pounds heaver than when measured in Indianapolis a month ago, at 199.
Reynaud ran a 4.46, quicker than his Combine best.
"We know they're fast," Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said.
Schmitt turned in a 4.74 and defensive tackle Johnny Dingle a 4.78. Dingle and Reynaud declined to do a couple of the other run tests they performed at the Combine.
Reynaud noted his faster time and added, "I didn't drop any balls, either."
Slaton's receiving might have been the highlight of Pro Day. He reached back on a go route, snared a pass behind him with his right hand and kept on sprinting.
"I showed them I can catch," Slaton mused.
Added cornerback Antonio Lewis, "Showed me, too."
Slaton said it was a product of desert training in January: "I told them I went out to Arizona and found some hands."
Seattle scout and former Mountaineers defensive back Charles Fisher of Aliquippa noted how Slaton impressed by doing a three-cone drill three times in a row, rather than taking breaks in between. And, he added: "It was a good day for Ryan Mundy to show what he can do. He didn't go to the Combine, and I thought that was a slight to him."
Mundy, a safety from Woodland Hills, and Lewis were among the other Mountaineers' Pro Day participants, who also included quarterback Adam Bednarik, defensive tackle Keilen Dykes, defensive backs Vaughn Rivers and Eric Wicks of Perry Traditional Academy, linebacker Marc Magro and cornerback Larry Williams.
NOTES -- The Mountaineers open spring drills today. ... Coach Mike Tomlin was among the Steelers' contingent, but the visit also gave him a chance to see his first football boss from Virginia Military Institute, Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart. ... A few dozen current players attended, including quarterback Patrick White, who brought a stopwatch to time his roommate Slaton. ... Schmitt skipped drills at the Combine because of an MCL sprain from the Senior Bowl but participated in all at Pro Day. He said yesterday he didn't miss the five consecutive hours of psychological testing in a camera-watched Combine room. The one question asking players if they were a dog or a cat? He wrote in lion.
