State System chief getting better pay, job perks in new post
Thursday, March 13, 2008

Though she is leaving a 110,000-student university system for a school that enrolls 5,000, State System of Higher Education Chancellor Judy Hample will draw a bigger paycheck at her new job in Virginia.

Dr. Hample's contract with the University of Mary Washington indicates that her base salary as campus president will start at $330,000 a year.

That figure compares with $327,718 she is making in her seventh year as chancellor of a system whose 14 universities include California, Clarion, Edinboro, Indiana and Slippery Rock in Western Pennsylvania.

In addition, Dr. Hample will receive $25,000 annually in deferred compensation, a benefit for which she was not eligible as State System chancellor. The deferred payments will be provided by the University of Mary Washington Foundation, an entity that supplements compensation that the public university typically pays its chief executive, officials said.

Dr. Hample, 60, whose appointment was announced Monday, begins her duties at Mary Washington on July 1. Her contract runs through June 30, 2013.

Under it, she will receive standard employee benefits plus executive perks including a $1,500-a-month car allowance from the foundation, plus fuel and other out-of-pocket costs to maintain the vehicle. Her State System allowance was $650 not counting maintenance reimbursements.

Her new employer will also reimburse her for reasonable moving and relocation costs and for memberships in clubs and organizations as deemed necessary by the university. After seven years, she will be eligible for a one-year sabbatical.

Under university rules, Dr. Hample must live in the school's presidential residence at university expense. The contract also provides for her appointment to a tenured position as a professor of communication.

Dr. Hample was not available for comment yesterday. She has not announced a departure date, though State System spokesman Kenn Marshall said she is expected to remain at least through the State System board of governors meeting April 9-10.
