Thursday, March 13, 2008

The judge in Dr. Cyril H. Wecht's federal fraud trial yesterday denied a defense motion to acquit the former Allegheny County coroner of all charges.

U.S. District Court Judge Arthur J. Schwab made the ruling after reviewing the defense's request and a response from prosecutors.

Such requests are common after the prosecution rests its case but are rarely granted.

Dr. Wecht is chargd with 41 counts including wire fraud, mail fraud and theft of honest services. Closing arguments are scheduled for Monday, after which the case will go to the jury.
