Water advisory lifted for Strip, Downtown
Wednesday, March 12, 2008

The water advisory that had been in effect since last night in the Strip District and Downtown Pittsburgh was lifted around 5 this morning.

Testing overnight showed that any foam used to fight a stubborn fire in the Strip has been removed from the water system by fire hydrant flushing efforts.

Residents and those workers in office buildings are asked to let the hot and cold water run for at least 10 minutes before using it.

Anyone who observes soapy water or foam in their taps should not use the water. Call the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority Lab at 412-334-1543. A representative will be sent to take samples and verify when the water is safe to use in private building systems. The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority serves 247,000 residents in the city and surrounding area.

The Allegheny County Health Department and Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority had issued the advisory last night as a precaution after foam used to fight the three-alarm fire yesterday in the Strip may have entered the water system serving those sections of the city.

Residents and businesses had been asked not to drink tap water or use it for cooking, bathing or washing dishes, glasses and cooking utensils.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which was reported around 11 a.m. at a warehouse at 25th and Smallman streets. City police said the fire started while welders were working at the site. It was brought under control around 3 p.m.
