State police in Uniontown charged a former Art Institute of Pittsburgh professor yesterday with stealing the identity of two of his family members and a former student at the institute.
Jason Douglas Joy, 37, of Mechanicsburg in Cumberland County, opened credit accounts in the names of his sister-in-law, Julie Paull of Uniontown, and his father-in-law, James Tressler of Hopwood, police said.
He also opened eBay accounts in the names of Ms. Paull and Erin Plavecsky, an Art Institute student from New Brighton, police said.
The four-year investigation of Mr. Joy resulted in four counts of identity theft and three counts each of unlawful use of a computer, criminal use of a communication facility and access device fraud. Police said the crimes occurred between November 2003 and September 2006.
Mr. Joy was arraigned yesterday and lodged in Fayette County Prison in lieu of $20,000.
