Personal care homes in McKeesport and Washington, Pa., plan voluntary shutdowns this spring.
Glenshire Woods personal care center, a 135-bed facility that has operated under two different owners in McKeesport for 20 years, told its 115 residents and 63 staff that it will close April 30.
Cherry Tree Assisted Living, on the sixth floor of Washington's George Washington Hotel on Main Street, announced it would close March 31. It has 45 beds, with 21 current residents and about 10 employees.
Personal care homes are required to give 30 days' notice of plans to cease operating. A Department of Public Welfare spokeswoman said both facilities are in good standing with the state, with regular licenses from passing their most recent annual inspections.
Glenshire Woods is owned by Extendicare Health Services Inc. of Milwaukee. Corporate spokeswoman Karen Schaewe said the shutdown has been caused by concern over the capital improvements Glenshire Woods' building would need to continue operating, and the company's intention to focus on skilled nursing care instead of less-intensive personal care. Extendicare has 21 nursing homes in Pennsylvania, but Glenshire Woods was its only personal care home in the state.
The number of personal care homes in Pennsylvania has dropped since the implementation of more stringent state regulations in 2005, but Ms. Schaewe said the new rules had nothing to do with Glenshire Woods' demise.
The national long-term care company acquired the home in 1994. The spokeswoman said she could not comment on what will happen to the property.
Cherry Tree Administrator Ron DeVerse said the 5-year-old personal care home has faced problems since a 2006 fire that began elsewhere in the 85-year-old George Washington building reduced the space available for the facility, which once had 83 residents. Cherry Tree's profitability was made more difficult by its number of low-income residents and the requirements of the new regulations, Mr. DeVerse said.
Cherry Tree is owned by Kyrk Pyros, who has undertaken extensive renovation of the historic George Washington Hotel.
It is used primarily for apartments, but Mr. DeVerse said a conversion of the personal care space to hotel rooms is planned.
