Sanchez paces Pirates, 13-8, but nightcap rained out
Friday, March 07, 2008

SARASOTA, Fla. - Freddy Sanchez had three hits and two RBIs in the Pirates' 13-8 romp past the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium, but the nightcap of the day-night doubleheader - which would have been the first game under lights at Bradenton's McKechnie Field - was rained out.

The game will not be made up.

Sanchez, still limited to designated hitter duty while his shoulder recovers from surgery, raised his spring average to .391.

Jack Wilson, Adam LaRoche, Neil Walker and Ronny Paulino each had two hits.

Two starters likely ticketed for Class AAA Indianapolis, John Van Benschoten and Luis Munoz, each struggled with command.

Van Benschoten's three-inning start saw Cincinnati take a 4-0 lead on five hits, including a three-run home run by Brandon Phillips in the first, and three walks.

The Pirates roared back with seven runs in the fourth, highlighted by Jason Bay's RBI double, Walker's two-run double and two-run singles by Steve Pearce and Wilson. The latter came after a 12-pitch at-bat that, upon completion, brought a warm ovation from the Reds' fans.

Munoz had an awful fourth inning in which he walked three and hit Ryan Freel with a pitch - forcing Freel out of the game - while allowing Cincinnati to pull within 7-6. He was not sent back out for his scheduled second inning.

Jonah Bayliss gave up another run in the fifth, and it was 7-7.

The Pirates leaped back ahead, 11-7, in the next inning on Sanchez's two-run single and follow-up run-producing singles by LaRoche and Paulino, as well as a Pearce groundout that brought his second RBI.

Ronald Belisario, T.J. Beam and Romulo Sanchez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Pirates are 3-6 in Grapefruit League play.

Tomorrow, the Pirates' Matt Morris will start against the Minnesota Twins' Scott Baker, 1:05 p.m. at McKechnie Field. Paul Maholm, the scheduled starter for the rainout tonight, will follow, with Jaret Wright, Sean Burnett and Matt Capps next.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
