Dukes qualify for tournament
Friday, March 07, 2008

Duquesne, which has lost five in a row, qualified for the Atlantic 10 Conference men's tournament without playing a game last night.

Charlotte's 77-61 victory against George Washington assured the Dukes (16-12, 6-9) of one of the 12 berths next week in Atlantic City, N.J.

Duquesne closes the regular season tomorrow at home against Saint Louis and would secure the 11th seed with a win. If the Dukes lose, the worst they could finish is in a three-way tie with George Washington and Fordham.

In that scenario, Fordham would get the tournament's No. 11 seed and Duquesne No. 12. George Washington would not qualify because it lost to Duquesne and Fordham. Duquesne and Fordham split two games, but Fordham would get the better seed on the strength of its win against second-place Temple. Duquesne's best league win is against Saint Joseph's, which can finish no higher than third.
