What really happened at Newport in 1965?
See for yourself in "The Other Side of the Mirror: Dylan Live at Newport Folk Festival," showing Saturday night at the Melwood Screening Room.
The film, which was released on DVD in November, is a collection of Dylan performances at the festival from 1963 to '65, with some never-before-seen footage. It charts his rapid progression from protest singer to plugged-in rocker, including such songs as "Chimes of Freedom," "It Ain't Me, Babe" (with Joan Baez), "Maggie's Farm" and "Like a Rolling Stone" in 1965.
A.O. Scott, of the New York Times wrote, "It's a remarkably pure and powerful documentary, partly because it's so simple. The sound mix is crisp, the black-and-white photography is lovely, and the songs, above all, can be heard in all their earnest, enigmatic glory, performed by an artist whose gifts are at once mysterious and self-evident."
This event includes live music from Paul Luc, Ben Hardt, Nicole Reynolds, Scotts Roger, Brad Yoder, and Steven Foxbury, beginning at 6:30 and a reception. Film begins at 7:30. Tickets are $8; $6 for members of WYEP or PF/PCA.
