The University of Pittsburgh Police Department has joined the City of Pittsburgh DUI Task Force, city police announced this week.
Joining the task force will give the department access to a $152,000 grant given to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and the DUI Task Force to crack down on impaired driving and underage drinking.
Part of the grant money will go to an operation called Cops in Shops, which deploys two Pitt plainclothes police officers in bars, at beer distributors and occasionally at large house parties to crack down on underage drinkers and those who provide alcohol to minors. Cops in Shops operations will occur sporadically throughout the year.
Friday was the first operation and resulted in four underage drinking arrests and two citations to establishments for serving alcohol to minors.
