The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the Borders Books Music & Cafe building in East Liberty's Eastside retail complex LEED gold certification.
It is the second Eastside building to be certified for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The PNC Bank building was the first.
The certification system rates a building's construction and design according to its energy efficiency, use of recycled and natural materials and other features that contribute to resource conservation.
In this case, rain water run-off from Eastside's roofs collects in an underground cistern and is used to water plants throughout the complex.
