Pirates cut two catchers from spring roster
Sunday, March 02, 2008

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates this morning made their first cuts of the spring, sending catchers Steve Lerud and Milver Reyes back to minor-league camp.

That left 65 players in the major-league fold.

Also, the team decided that Tom Gorzelanny's one inning will come at the start of the exhibition this afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays. Originally, he was scheduled to pitch his one inning -- he was held out of his spring debut Thursday because of shoulder soreness -- after Paul Maholm's two-inning start. Now, Maholm will go second.

Two other injury updates: Outfielder Nate McLouth described his tight right hamstring as "a ton better" after taking morning batting practice at McKechnie Field. And reliever Damaso Marte will not make his scheduled spring debut in a B-game tomorrow because he still feels weak from the fever he had two weeks ago. He will have a bullpen session instead and, if all goes well, pitch Thursday.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
