It had been 26 games and nearly three months since Hampton last tasted defeat.
That was until the Talbots were left with a sour taste in their mouths last night in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs.
WPIAL champion Hampton (26-3) was upset by District 10 No. 3 Mercyhurst Prep, 49-44, in overtime at North Allegheny.
Junior guard Kirsten Olowinski came up huge for Mercyhurst Prep (27-2), scoring a game-high 27 points, including seven of the Lakers' nine points in overtime. Olowinski also connected on all five of her free throws in the extra period.
Mercyhurst Prep made 15 of 18 free throws in the game, while Hampton was 6 of 13.
Jodie Luther and Laurel Hansen led the Talbots with 10 points apiece.
Westinghouse 49, Chartiers Valley 45: Aquana Diggs scored 19 points to lead City League champion Westinghouse (23-4) past Chartiers Valley (20-8) at Allderdice. Shalonda Winton netted 14 points for the Bulldogs, who held on after taking their biggest lead, 43-31, with 3:32 left. Paige Aleski scored 10 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Colts.
West Mifflin 48, Meadville 33: The WPIAL runner-up Titans (25-4) got 18 points from Raven Metz in a comfortable win against District 10 runner-up Meadville (20-8) at New Castle.
Indiana 58, St. Marys 41: The Little Indians (24-4) advanced with a win over District 9 champion St. Marys (22-4) at Clarion University. Tiara Stossel scored 17 points for Indiana.
Bellefonte 53, Ambridge 47: Despite Kiki Brown's 28 points, Ambridge (16-10) was upended by District 6 champion Bellefonte (21-6) at Tyrone.
General McLane 56, Perry 36: Perry (16-11) saw its season come to an end with a loss to District 10 champion General McLane (23-5) at Allegheny College. DeShawn Carey led the Commodores with 13 points.
Mount Alvernia 65, Austin 47: Fresh off its eighth WPIAL title, Mount Alvernia (18-8) got 25 points from Lisa Kaczynski and 23 from Renee Brown to run past Austin (16-13) at Hempfield.
Monessen 47, Ferndale 25: The WPIAL runner-up Greyhounds (27-1) rebounded from their only loss of the season to defeat Ferndale (22-6) at North Hills. Jessica Diggs scored 16 points for Monessen.
Avonworth 66, Shanksville-Stonycreek 47: Tara Gallupe scored a career-high 30 points to help lead Avonworth (15-10) to a come-from-behind win against Shanksville-Stonycreek (19-9) at Plum. The Antelopes trailed, 27-26, at halftime, but outscored the Vikings, 40-20, in the second half.
Saltsburg 47, Serra 46: Katie Muffley hit a free throw with 6.7 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Saltsburg to a win against Serra at Central Cambria. Tamara Blankenship scored seven of her game-high 24 points in overtime for Saltsburg (21-6). Jade Stewart paced Serra (16-7) with 18 points. The Eagles hit 6 of 21 free-throw attempts, including 1 of 13 in the first half.
Vincentian 70, Berlin-Brothersvalley 32: The Royals (18-9) rolled to their first PIAA playoff victory since 2003 by blowing past District 5 champion Berlin-Brothersvalley (21-8) at Chestnut Ridge. Maria Petrisko scored a game-high 19 points for Vincentian.
