The Rodriguez Aftermath / Magee waiting for results of racism probe
Sunday, March 02, 2008

Calvin Magee has opened discussions with the West Virginia office investigating his accusations of racism, and he has asked the Black Coaches and Administrators to closely participate in the probe as well.

The BCA, at his request, interceded in the university investigation by the Office of Social Justice so Magee can feel, in his words, "comfortable" about the process at the place where he spent the past seven years as running backs coach, the past four years as offensive coordinator and the past year as assistant head coach.

"I'm cooperating," Magee said this week over the telephone from Michigan, where ex-Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez hired him as associate head coach two months ago. "But cooperation is a two-way street.

"I want to know if they have done their work and investigated what I've stated and the facts. I want to know have the administrators [in question] been contacted and asked questions about this incident? Have they talked to all the athletic directors? Have they done that? Or have they swept it under the rug? There's a process that needs to be done. And that's what we're waiting for."

Magee said he spoke in the past week or so with Jennifer McIntosh, the Social Justice executive director, but, as far as he knows, university officials have yet to complete a Robeson Foundation survey recently sent to them as a facet of routine BCA procedure. The survey is a questionnaire for Division I programs concerning equity and minority candidacies in their searches for new football and men's basketball coaches. BCA Executive Director Floyd Keith is taking part in West Virginia's investigation -- to the point he might be present when McIntosh formally interviews Magee -- while conducting a separate probe, the findings of which will be published in his association's annual Hiring Report Card this fall.

Keith wrote in an email that he has spoken recently with West Virginia officials and will be "corroborating information we have from their reply to our Hiring Report Card inquiries." He declined further comment and closed by using a legal term for compiling evidence: "Discovery is ongoing."

McIntosh likewise deferred comment, saying: "The investigation is not completed."

In making public in the Post-Gazette Jan. 20 his concerns that privately festered for weeks, Magee offered accusations that included:

• Mountaineers Athletic Director Ed Pastilong reacted to the BCA's request to consider a minority candidate by framing a Dec. 21 question to Magee in a discriminatory manner about a job interview "that wouldn't mean much" in West Virginia's search for a head coach. Pastilong denied that chain of events, saying Magee earlier "confirmed ... his intention to go to Michigan."

• An unidentified Mountaineers administrator pointed to his skin and offered race as a reason why Magee wouldn't have a legitimate chance at being a head-coaching candidate at West Virginia. Added Magee this week, "Instead of doing all the speculation about who said what, do an investigation ... and quit speculating and naming people who aren't administrators."

• University President Mike Garrison, in the on-field and locker-room aftermath of West Virginia's Fiesta Bowl triumph, shook hands with every Mountaineers assistant but Magee. Garrison later said he tried to reach every assistant.

"Some time has passed, but the facts are still there," Magee said. "This is what I went through and wanted to share. I got it off my chest. Facts are facts. I was told in good faith [by McIntosh] that there would be an investigation. I'm simply waiting on a report from them on what they've investigated. It's pretty simple."

In other West Virginia matters, university and athletic spokespersons reported nothing was new on investigations into allegations of Rodriguez shredding documents and making cell phone calls to Michigan recruits, and Rodriguez's lawyers responded to university attorneys' request for an expedited case in Monongalia County Court -- before next football season, they prefer -- by filing motions seeking to tape a March 19 deposition of Pastilong and requesting an array of 2006-07 documentation and communications among the offices of Garrison, Pastilong, Gov. Joe Manchin and others.
