If Andy Warhol, David Lawrence or Rachel Carson were alive today, what would their homes look like?
You can see local designers' answers to that question in a special exhibit created for the Home & Garden Show by members of the Pennsylvania West chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.
At last year's home show, ASID's Designer Showcase included a series of room vignettes designed to reflect the tastes of local celebrities and politicians. Looking toward Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary this year, show executive director John DeSantis suggested the designers create rooms inspired by famous Pittsburghers past and present.
"I loved the idea," said chapter president Lori Anthony. "It's a great way for our designers to remember the important people of Pittsburgh."
In addition to rooms honoring the native-born pop artist, beloved mayor and environmentalist, ASID members were planning spaces for local actor David Conrad and industrialist Henry Clay Frick.
Nancy Drew and Jeanette Waksmunski of Drew Designs, co-chairs of the room project, are working with Mr. Conrad, best known for his role in the TV show "Ghost Whisperer." His interest in the city's steelmaking history will be evident in the decor, Ms. Waksmunski said.
Karolyn Spagnolo of Spagnolo Design is creating a bathroom reflecting Mr. Lawrence's efforts to clean up Pittsburgh's "smoky city" image, she said. The other designers and their famous "clients" are:
Andrea Pohl of Andrea Pohl Interiors, a "green" study for Rachael Carson.
Melodie Schooley of Arrangements with Style, an art-filled space for Andy Warhol.
Nancy Sakino Spears of Interiors by Decorating Den, a child's bedroom inspired by one at Clayton, Henry Clay Frick's Point Breeze estate.
The ASID Designers Showcase will be on the second floor of the Convention Center.
