Main roads around Birmingham Bridge to close Saturday
Thursday, February 28, 2008

PennDOT is warning drivers that it will have to close the Parkway East, Second Avenue, Boulevard of the Allies, Forbes Avenue and Brady Street on Saturday morning as crews work to reopen the southbound lanes this weekend on the Birmingham Bridge.

The closings will last two to three hours.

According to a news release, the closures are a precaution as the shifted southbound span of the Birmingham Bridge is jacked and adjusted back to its proper elevation. The closures will begin at 7 a.m. and conclude by 10 a.m.

If work progresses according to plan, the southbound side of the bridge is tentatively scheduled to reopen to traffic (cars and buses only), one lane in each direction, before the start of the morning rush hour on Monday.

The closures Saturday morning will occur in the area of the Birmingham Bridge at the following locations:

Parkway East -- Westbound will be closed at Exit 3 (traffic will be forced to exit at Bates Street); Eastbound will be closed at Exit 1 (traffic will be forced to exit at Grant Street).

Second Avenue at 10th Street and at Bates Street.

Brady Street will be completely closed.

Forbes Avenue at Moultrie Street.

Boulevard of the Allies -- Outbound (eastbound) closed at Liberty Bridge; Inbound closed at Craft Avenue.

The ramp from Fifth Avenue onto the Boulevard of the Allies will be closed.

The ramp from the Boulevard of the Allies to the westbound Parkway East will be closed.
