DEP meeting set on Greene County mine expansion
Thursday, February 28, 2008

The state Department of Environmental Protection will hold an informational meeting about a proposal to expand the Cumberland Coal Resources LP deep mine and its subsidence area in Greene County by 4,677 acres.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. March 11 at the Center Township fire hall on West Roy Furman Highway, Rogersville.

The mining company's permit proposal also requests permission to perform stream restoration and remediation if needed at two locations on Pursley Creek that could be subsided and damaged by the mining.

DEP has been criticized by some environmental groups for its use of afternoon meetings because they are difficult for working residents to attend.

Copies of the application are on file for public review by appointment at the DEP Bureau of District Mining Operations California District Office, 25 Technology Drive, California Technology Park, Coal Center in Washington County. Interested persons may schedule an appointment to review the application by calling 724-769-1100.

Townships impacted by the proposed mining may call to get a copy of the permit to make available for their residents. Copies of the application also are on file at the Office of Recorder of Deeds, Greene County Courthouse, 10 E. High St., Waynesburg.
