McKeesport Mayor Jimmy Brewster obviously has a voracious appetite for power. ["Mayor proposes creating city's own chamber of commerce,'' Feb. 21, South.]
Not content to only run city hall, Mr. Brewster tried to take over the McKeesport Area School District with McKeesport city employees running for seats on the school board, even though the city charter was not in agreement with those tactics. Now he's aiming to take over the business community as well.
His idea of what's best for McKeesport went out with prohibition. I remember my urban sociology professor back in the early 1970s stressing the need to think large when marketing a region, not just a city, county or state, but regions, like the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast.
And, in this global economy, does the McKeesport Democrat really believe he can do it all and on his own?
No doubt, Mayor Jimmy will use his clout as leader of a city to convince all that he knows more about economic development than what world-renowned experts profess.
Little wonder the local university [Penn State Allegheny in McKeesport] had the sense to distance its facility from the local Democrat. Who knows, maybe the school would have some day been known as the University of Brewsterport.
