McKelvey Oil Co. of Johnstown has been fined $145,000 for failing to register and inspect its large above-ground storage tanks and told to stop using them in two locations.
The state Department of Environmental Protection announced the fine yesterday after the company did not respond to an administrative order issued Oct. 5, requiring the registration and inspection of tanks containing home heating oil and kerosene.
McKelvey's Johnstown tank farm in Stoneycreek, Cambria County, is a bulk distributor with 10 above ground storage tanks, five with a capacity of more than 29,000 gallons and five holding 14,600 gallons. Another McKelvey bulk fuel storage facility in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, known locally as Gilbert Brothers Oil, has one tank with a 75,000-gallon capacity and another with a 128,000-gallon capacity.
